Mission Accomplished: My 350D Astro Mod!
Unleashing the Red: My Canon 350D Astro Mod!
After devouring countless articles about the benefits of removing the built-in IR-cut filter in Canon EOS 350D (and similar DSLRs) for astrophotography, I finally decided it was time to give my own 350D the full astro treatment. My shiny new Baader ACF II replacement filter arrived this morning, and I wasted no time diving into the camera’s guts this afternoon. It wasn’t overly complicated, but definitely required a delicate touch to avoid breaking anything during disassembly and reassembly. The whole operation took me about two hours. I was absolutely thrilled to see everything power up and function correctly on the first try! Here’s a quick test shot taken in auto mode right after the modification:
And here’s another, after a quick manual white balance (just pointed at a white sheet of paper in the sun – classic tech setup, right?):
The results are looking pretty sweet for a first daytime test! Tomorrow night, weather permitting, I’ll be taking my very first astrophotos with the newly modified 350D… I seriously can’t wait!
