AIP Workshop: Pure Joy!
A.I.P. 2010: An Astro-Imaging Workshop for the Books!
Just got back from the latest A.I.P workshop (Astro Image Processing), and my head is buzzing with awesome memories and fresh ideas! A.I.P is an association founded by Nicolas Outters, Franck Bugnet, and Eric Mouquet, dedicated to teaching amateur astronomers the ropes of astro image processing. Their annual workshop brings together around sixty passionate sky imagers. It’s truly the perfect opportunity to meet fellow astrophotographers, share some fantastic moments for three days, and just escape the daily grind. For me, it was especially cool to catch up with two good friends: Jérôme Rudelle (astrojéjé) and Didier Chaplain (astrodic).

This year’s gathering spot was an astronomy center nestled in a truly stunning location, right across from the Observatoire de Haute Provence (OHP). Fun fact: this is where Michel Mayor discovered the first exoplanet back in 1995! Talk about inspiring, right?

Snow greeted us under a gorgeous sun. The big question: would the night sky be as stunning as the daytime view?

After grabbing our USB sticks loaded with workshop materials and getting our group assignments sorted, it was off to find a dorm room big enough for us all. I was lucky enough to share mine with Jérôme, Didier, Laurent, Olivier, and Thierry (who I’d actually carpooled with from home).

No sooner had we settled in than it was already dinner time! What was on our plates that first evening? Honestly, no clue! We were all so engrossed in chatting about everything – and especially astro – that the time just flew by.

Then the first lectures kicked off, followed by the workshops. Everything moved so quickly, and we soaked up so much knowledge – it was an absolute blast!

Nicolas Outters, a legendary astrophotographer whose articles in Astronomy Magazine mean he needs no introduction, led a series of lectures and workshops, assisted by Jérôme. He showed us the ropes: how to master curves and levels, seamlessly blend Ha and RGB data, protect the sky background, and still pull out those incredibly fine details in the spiral arms of a galaxy or a faint nebula… Seriously, it was pure imaging bliss!

Cool gear was on display everywhere, tucked between the various setups. Case in point: an ASA mount here (which, ironically, never quite cooperated, even with two pros flown in all the way from Austria to troubleshoot it!).

These three days also offered the perfect chance for some late-night hacking and tinkering in our rooms. For our crew, it was all about DSLR mods, programming, and electronics… naturally, all fueled by delicious charcuterie and fine wines courtesy of our friend Laurent. Who says astrophotography is just spending lonely nights out in the cold?

As all good things must come to an end, it was time to say goodbye… or rather, ‘see you very soon!’ A huge thank you to everyone who made this workshop happen, and especially to those whose kindness, great humor, and willingness to share made it such a genuinely joyful experience.
