Importing Astronomy Gear: Your Essential Guide
I’ve bought most of my astronomy gear, and frankly, a lot of my tech, from online stores. I’ve scoured the internet for deals, often landing on sites in the US, but also Hong Kong, Portugal, England, Canada, and beyond.
Why go through the hassle? Simple: the final price, even with shipping and customs duties, often ends up being incredibly attractive. And with the Euro holding its own against the dollar, those savings just keep getting sweeter!
My biggest astro purchase online? A Celestron C11 XLT with its CG5 Goto mount. I snagged it from the US and, after a 3-month wait (they were out of the XLT model, so I had to be patient!), it arrived. The grand total? About 35% cheaper than if I’d bought it locally in France, including shipping, taxes, and customs! What a steal, especially since Celestron’s packaging is practically bomb-proof.
Now, I’ll be honest, there’s always a certain amount of risk involved in these kinds of international operations. While everything has gone smoothly for me, I can’t guarantee the same for everyone. However, for smaller accessories, I genuinely believe the risk is minimal, and the value-for-money is simply unbeatable. Maybe I’m just incredibly lucky, but across roughly fifty international online purchases, I’ve never encountered a single issue!
