The Baader Filter Mod for My Canon 350D
Prepping My Canon 350d for Deep Sky H-alpha!
Well, it’s finally happening! I’ve made the decision to modify my trusty EOS 350d to make it much more sensitive to the H-alpha wavelength. This means I’ll finally be able to capture those elusive deep-sky objects (especially emission nebulae) that have been incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to photograph without this crucial modification.
So, the plan is to carefully disassemble my DSLR, remove the original IR-cut filter, and replace it with a Baader ACF II filter (ref. 245 9212). I chose this particular filter because it does a fantastic job of blocking infrared light while allowing full, unhindered transmission of the glorious red H-alpha line.
I’ve already ordered the filter from Mécastronic, and it should be arriving in just a few days. Once it’s here, I’ll be sure to put together a mini-tutorial on the 350d modification process for anyone else looking to dive into this.
If all goes smoothly, it’s hello narrowband imaging (H-alpha, SII, OIII) for me!
