Nailing Focus in the Dark: My Hartman Mask Secret

Let’s be real, if there’s one topic that gets astrophotographers talking (and sometimes grumbling), it’s definitely achieving that perfect, razor-sharp focus on our telescopes! There are tons of solutions out there for tackling the focusing challenge: from simple fishing line masks (hello, Bahtinov!) to Ronchi gratings, all the way up to fancy computer-controlled autofocus systems with electronic focusers. What I’m sharing here isn’t necessarily more effective than other methods, but it’s incredibly straightforward to pull off in the dark, especially when it’s chilly and your fingers are a little numb! This technique relies on a Hartman mask to nail perfect focus in under a minute:

  • Mount your Hartman mask onto your telescope.
  • Point your scope at a bright star.

As you adjust your focuser, you’ll see three distinct “stars” gradually merge into one, becoming increasingly intense as you zero in on optimal focus. Some folks prefer a Hartman mask where one of the three circular holes is replaced by a triangular one. Might be worth experimenting with…
