Modding My Coronado PST!
The Coronado PST (Personal Solar Telescope) is a neat little H-alpha refractor, sporting a 4cm aperture and 40cm focal length. Its Fabry-Perot etalon, the heart of its solar magic, sits conveniently at the back of the tube.
But let’s be honest, 4cm is pretty tiny when you’re chasing solar flares! So, some ingenious amateur astronomers in the US came up with a brilliant idea: modify their PSTs, essentially keeping just the etalon assembly, and adapt it to a larger diameter telescope. This clever hack quickly caught on, and here in France, several astrophotographers have also successfully pulled off this modification.
One fantastic example comes from Sébastien Kersten, who, on his Astropixel website, detailed how he modded his PST to pair it with a mighty FSQ106 refractor. The results? Absolutely breathtaking!
