Stargazing with the Ancient Maya!
Unlocking the Cosmos: My Dive into Maya Astronomy
Fresh back from Mexico, I just had to share some of the incredible insights I picked up, especially after visiting the archaeological site of Chichén Itza – once the main Maya city on the Yucatán Peninsula.

The Maya were truly brilliant astronomers and masterful mathematicians. Through meticulous observation and advanced calculations, they managed to create calendars of astonishing precision! These calendars allowed them to pinpoint everything from the sun’s position during eclipses, solstices, and equinoxes, to the phases of the Moon and the cycles of nature. Their observations primarily focused on Venus, but they also tracked Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and the Pleiades. They meticulously recorded their findings in Codices (collections of folded sheets or notebooks), but sadly, most of these were destroyed during the Spanish invasion. (Apparently, preserving cultural heritage wasn’t exactly high on their priority list…)
At the Chichén Itza site, one of the most remarkable Maya astronomical structures is the “El Caracol” observatory. In Spanish, “Caracol” means “Snail,” likely due to its unique shape and the spiraling ramp that leads to its summit. Its walls contain specific sightlines that accurately mark the setting positions of both the Sun and the Moon during the spring equinox. Talk about precision engineering!

The Milky Way also held immense significance for the Maya. It represented the mythical path taken by the souls of the departed, journeying from the depths of the Earth to the afterlife! Based on their calculations of planetary positions, they even pinpointed the intersection point of the ecliptic with the Milky Way. For the Maya, when the sun aligned in conjunction with this cosmic crossroads, it signified reaching a new level of spiritual consciousness.
The next such conjunction was predicted to occur during the winter solstice of 2012, specifically on December 21st. This date marked the end of a 5,125-year cycle, leading many to interpret it as, no less, the end of the world! However, for the Maya, it was primarily seen as the dawn of a new era. So, mark your calendars for December 22nd to see which prediction holds true! 😉
