Sir Isaac's Legacy: My Optics Experiments
Big Glass, Simple Pleasures: My 500mm Dobsonian’s First Light
It’s been almost a year since I lovingly renovated Sir Isaac, my 500mm Dobsonian… And I finally managed to carve out some time to give it a proper test run under the beautiful Ardèche skies! After that initial night of testing, I tweaked a few things to improve the tube’s balance, especially when pointing close to the horizon.
Now, the scope is an absolute joy to use, and the light-gathering power of a mirror this size is truly astounding. While I’m not primarily a visual observer, I was blown away: large nebulae appear with incredible clarity and detail, star clusters are simply magnificent, and planetary views are just breathtaking. I honestly didn’t expect it to be this good!
The real magic of a Dobsonian, though, is its sheer simplicity. No computers, no tangled cables (just a small power supply for the primary mirror fan). It’s a breath of fresh air. I’m rediscovering the night sky in the most straightforward way possible, and I’m loving every single moment of it.
